Aloha and welcome to Hawaiʻi! Join Ian Akahi Masterson, AKA The Surf Professor, on a roughly 3-mile round trip along the coast to Kawela Bay and back to learn about Hawaiian culture and mythology connected to the majestic natural scenery surrounding Turtle Bay Hotel. Like footprints in the sand, the mana (supernatural power) of Hawaiian deities and ancestors still resonates from the ʻāina (land that feeds us), their stories written on the landscape for us to explore and experience. Learn about the flowing currents of space and time that are likened to the sea, the chiefly surfer who challenged the great waves off of the Cape called Ka Lae o ka Manu, where the hotel now stands, and discover the life-giving waters of the great god Kāne, who, gifted the people of Kawela with life-giving waters that spring forth from the ground! Come share in the culture and spirit of those who came before us and enjoy good company as we wander along to this sacred place called Kawela!

Note: Please bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, and feel free to wear shorts and slippers or reef walkers since we walk on a beach with deep sand; however, a portion of the trail is rocky and can be muddy, plus, it is also an equestrian trail, so please bring footwear that can handle the natural terrain. Mahalo and Aloha!
Class time devoted to lecture: More than 45 minutes
